Netnod launches COMIX IXP in Copenhagen!
Copenhagen, recently declared the happiest city in the world, gets happier as a new hot spot for Internet traffic.
Netnod, the largest Internet exchange point (IXP) operator in Northern Europe has today agreed to take over the operations of the Danish Internet exchange point, COPHIX.
Netnod will not only take over the operation of IXP services at the three existing COPHIX locations in Copenhagen, these locations will also be interconnected with the existing Netnod exchange point in Malmö, creating the new distributed IXP, COMIX.
This expansion will connect two separate cities across the Öresund bridge, and will thereby drastically increase the value for network operators in Copenhagen as well as those in Malmö. This new distributed IXP, COMIX, will thus link local and international operators in Southern Sweden and in Denmark.
"We have for a long time had discussions with Internet operators in Denmark, who have been wanting a better interconnection solution in Copenhagen," explains Netnod CEO Kurtis Lindqvist. "By taking over the responsibility of COPHIX and expanding it into Southern Sweden, we are creating the optimum solution for content providers and network operators to interconnect and service a very large and dynamic region. We are very excited about the new possibilities that the COMIX solution offers to networks in both countries." Lindqvist continues.
COPHIX consists today of three interconnected sites in Copenhagen: Telia Telehouse, Interxion Copenhagen and Global Connect.

An Internet exchange point is a place where Internet operators, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), content providers, and other networks can connect to exchange traffic, also know as "peering". By connecting to an IXP, Internet operators save costs, reduce latency, and increase speed in their networks. It also places the control of the traffic in the hands of the operator, ensuring a higher quality of service for their customers. Exchange points are a vital part of the Internet, as they increase robustness and stability in the Internet, and also importantly facilitate the exchange of Internet traffic between different networks. It is an established fact, that the presence of a well-run Internet exchange point, can boost Internet development in that region.
