State of the Internet in Sweden 2020-03-19 16:00

In this blog, we try to assess the health of the Swedish Internet during this crisis. We aim to mitigate the generation of fake news and rumours. This is the information we at Netnod currently know about.

I have received many questions about what one can do if video conferencing services are not working flawlessly, especially when the video is choppy or audio is breaking up. To explain, we have to look at three different places where there could be problems:

1) Providers of services. These are upgrading as fast as they can. One example is that Swedish University Network (SUNET) has upgraded their hosted Zoom service from 20 000 to 120 000 simultaneous users.

2) The core of the Internet at the ISPs, which is holding together well at the moment.

3) At home, where there are a few things you can do to increase the quality of your video conferencing:

  • Order an upgrade, even if it does not help during the ongoing call
  • If you use a computer, swap from WiFi to ethernet, and also move other things in your home (like your TV) to ethernet to offload the WiFi
  • Swap between computer and mobile as the device you use for the conference
  • If you use a mobile phone, swap between WiFi and mobile data, one might work better than the other and it might change from day to day
  • Turn off video and ask others on the call to turn off video unless necessary for the conference to be efficient
  • Always use a headset and mute when you do not speak
